Why is my AC freezing up?

Ice on the coil or copper lines — what causes it and how to thaw it safely.

If you see ice on your indoor coil or the copper refrigerant line, your AC is freezing up — and a frozen system blows warm air even while it runs. The two root causes are almost always restricted airflow (a dirty filter, closed vents, or a failing blower) or low refrigerant from a leak. The fix is to shut the system off, let it thaw completely, and then correct the cause so it doesn't ice over again.

How to thaw a frozen AC

What "freezing up" actually means

Your AC cools by passing warm indoor air over a cold evaporator coil. If that coil drops below freezing, the moisture in the air turns to ice on it. Once ice builds up, it insulates the coil, blocks airflow, and the system blows warm even though it's running hard. So ice is always a symptom of another problem — never the root cause.

Airflow problems (the most common cause)

Anything that restricts airflow across the coil can freeze it: a clogged air filter, closed or blocked supply vents, a dirty blower wheel, or collapsed and undersized ductwork. Start with the filter and make sure furniture or rugs aren't covering returns and vents. Restore airflow and most freeze-ups stop — the same airflow-first logic behind an AC that won't blow cold.

Low refrigerant (the other main cause)

A low refrigerant charge drops the coil's pressure and temperature until it ices over — and a low charge means a leak, not normal use. If your AC keeps freezing after you've replaced the filter and opened the vents, this is the likely culprit and a job for a licensed tech to find, seal, and recharge.

Why you can't just keep running it

Running a frozen system forces liquid refrigerant back toward the compressor — the most expensive part in the unit — and can destroy it. The melting ice also overflows the drain pan and can leak into your home (see AC leaking water). Shut it off at the first sign of ice.

How to stop it happening again

Change filters on schedule, keep vents and returns clear, and get an annual tune-up that checks the refrigerant charge and cleans the coil. Right-sized systems that are properly charged rarely freeze.
