Why does my breaker keep tripping?

It's a safety device working — overload, short, or ground fault. How to tell.

A circuit breaker that keeps tripping isn't broken — it's doing exactly what it's designed to do: cutting power before a wiring problem starts a fire. The three causes are an overloaded circuit (too many things drawing power), a short circuit, or a ground fault. You can safely diagnose an overload yourself; a breaker that trips instantly or repeatedly points to a wiring fault that needs a licensed electrician. Here's how to tell them apart — safely.

Overloaded circuit (the most common cause)

Every circuit has a limit (usually 15 or 20 amps). Run too many things at once — space heaters, hair dryers, a microwave and a toaster on the same kitchen circuit — and the breaker trips to keep the wires from overheating. Short circuit

A short circuit happens when a hot wire touches a neutral (or another hot) directly, letting a huge current flow — the breaker trips instantly to stop it. Causes include damaged wiring, a faulty appliance or cord, or a bad outlet or switch. A breaker that trips the instant you reset it, or as soon as a particular device is plugged in, is signaling a short. This is not a DIY fix — it needs a professional to find and repair.

Ground fault

A ground fault is when a hot wire touches something grounded (a metal box, water, the earth). It's especially dangerous around water, which is why kitchens, baths, garages, and outdoor outlets use GFCI protection that trips fast to prevent shock. A breaker or GFCI tripping in a wet area often means a ground fault in a device or the wiring.

What you can (and can't) safely do

Safe DIY: reset the breaker once, unplug things to reduce load, and note the pattern. Not DIY: opening the panel, chasing a short, or repeatedly resetting a breaker that won't hold. A breaker that trips instantly or keeps tripping is protecting you from a real fault — forcing it back on again and again can overheat wiring and start a fire. That's the point to call a licensed electrician.

A breaker exists to trip — that's the feature, not the failure. If it trips once under heavy load, reduce the load and reset.
