What is a GFCI outlet?

A GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet is a life-safety device that cuts power in a fraction of a second when it detects electricity leaking to ground — the kind of fault that causes shocks and electrocutions. That's why code requires GFCI protection anywhere water and electricity meet: kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry rooms, and outdoors. If an outlet has "test" and "reset" buttons, that's a GFCI. Here's how they work and where you need them.

How a GFCI protects you

A GFCI constantly compares the current flowing out on the hot wire with the current returning on the neutral. If even a tiny amount (about 5 milliamps) goes missing — because it's leaking through a person or water to ground — it shuts off in milliseconds, fast enough to prevent a fatal shock. It protects people, which is why it's required exactly where the shock risk is highest.

Where code requires GFCIs

Modern electrical code requires GFCI protection for outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, laundry areas, outdoors, and near sinks and pools. Older homes often lack them in some of these spots — a common and worthwhile safety upgrade. If you're remodeling, GFCIs (and often AFCIs) are part of bringing the circuit up to code.

Testing and resetting

Test a GFCI monthly: press TEST (power should cut off), then RESET (power returns). If pressing TEST doesn't cut power, the GFCI is faulty and should be replaced. When a GFCI trips and an outlet goes dead, look for a tripped GFCI on that circuit — sometimes in another room (a garage or bathroom GFCI can control outdoor or nearby outlets) — and press RESET.

GFCI vs. AFCI

A GFCI protects people from shock (ground faults); an AFCI protects your home from fire (arc faults from damaged wiring). Modern code uses both in different areas, and combination devices exist. GFCIs are one of the highest-value safety devices in your home, and they only work if they're functional and not bypassed. Test them monthly, replace any that fail the test, and never "solve" a nuisance-tripping GFCI by removing it or wiring around it — it trips because it detects current leaking to ground, exactly the fault it's there to stop.
