If your home has two-prong outlets, they're almost certainly not grounded — and even some three-prong outlets in older homes were wired without a real ground. Grounding is a safety path that protects you from shock and protects sensitive electronics, and it's required for surge protectors to actually work. Here's how to tell whether your outlets are grounded, why it matters, and the right (and wrong) ways to upgrade.

What grounding actually does

A grounded outlet has a third wire that provides a safe path for electricity if something faults — instead of the metal case of an appliance becoming live and shocking you, the fault current runs to ground and trips the breaker. It's a core safety feature, and it's also what lets surge protectors divert spikes. No ground, no real surge protection.

Two-prong vs. three-prong

Homes wired before the 1960s often have two-prong outlets with no ground wire at all. The trap: sometimes a previous owner replaced two-prong outlets with three-prong ones without adding a ground — which is unsafe and against code, because the third slot promises protection that isn't there. So a three-prong outlet doesn't guarantee grounding; you have to test.

How to test your outlets

A plug-in outlet tester (a few dollars at any hardware store) tells you in seconds whether an outlet is properly grounded and wired. Plug it in and read the light pattern. If you find ungrounded three-prong outlets, that's a safety issue to address — those "open ground" outlets give a false sense of security.

The right way to upgrade

There are two correct fixes for an ungrounded outlet: run a proper ground wire (ideal, sometimes done during a rewire), or protect it with a GFCI, which is a code-recognized way to make an ungrounded three-prong outlet safe (labeled "GFCI Protected, No Equipment Ground").
