Visible damage

The obvious signs are on the surface: cracked, warped, buckled, or loose panels, and especially any rot, soft spots, or holes. Isolated damage from a stray impact can often be repaired, but widespread cracking, warping, or rot means the siding is failing across the house. Rot is the serious one — it means moisture is already getting through, and where you can see rot there's often more hidden behind it.

The hidden interior clues

Some of the best signs are inside. If interior paint or wallpaper is peeling or bubbling on exterior walls, that's often moisture passing through failed siding — a red flag that shouldn't be ignored. Mold or mildew inside on outer walls points the same way. Failing siding lets water reach the sheathing and framing, so these indoor symptoms frequently reveal a siding problem before the outside looks obviously bad.

Rising bills and constant upkeep
