Why is my water not getting hot?

No hot water, lukewarm, or running out fast — the cause depends on your heater.

"No hot water" has a few flavors, and each points somewhere different: none at all, lukewarm-only, or hot water that runs out too fast. The cause also depends on whether your heater is gas (a pilot or gas-supply issue) or electric (a failed heating element or thermostat). Sediment and a too-small or aging tank are common culprits too. Here's how to read the symptom and narrow it down.

No hot water at all

On a gas heater, no hot water usually means the pilot light or burner is out, or the gas supply is interrupted — relight the pilot per the label, and if it won't stay lit, the thermocouple or gas valve may be faulty. On an electric heater, first check the breaker; electric heaters also have a reset button on the upper thermostat that trips on overheating. If neither restores heat, a heating element or thermostat has likely failed.

Lukewarm or not hot enough

Electric heaters have two heating elements; when the lower one fails, you get a little warm water that quickly turns cool. A wrong or failing thermostat can also leave water lukewarm — check that it's set around 120°F. On any heater, heavy sediment insulates the water from the heat source and reduces output.

Runs out too fast

If the water starts hot but runs cold quickly, the tank may be too small for your household (see water heater sizing), or sediment has reduced its effective capacity. A failing lower element on an electric unit produces the same symptom. A tankless that runs cold under heavy demand may be undersized for the peak flow.

When to call a pro

Relighting a pilot or resetting a breaker is fine to try. But replacing heating elements or thermostats, diagnosing a gas valve or thermocouple, flushing heavy sediment, or working on gas lines is pro territory.
