Signs you need to repipe your house

Repiping — replacing your home's water supply pipes — is a big job, but for some homes it's the right one. The signs: rusty or discolored water, leaks that keep popping up, low pressure throughout the house, and outdated pipe materials like galvanized steel or polybutylene that fail with age. If you're patching leak after leak in an older home, a repipe often costs less over time than the endless repairs. Here's how to know.

Rusty water and repeat leaks

Discolored or rusty water — especially first thing in the morning — points to corroding metal pipe shedding from the inside. And when you're fixing leaks every few months in different spots, that's not bad luck; it's aging pipe reaching the end of its life throughout the system. Both are classic repipe signals.

Whole-house low pressure

Old galvanized-steel pipe corrodes and scales shut from the inside over decades, choking flow to every fixture. If your whole house has weak pressure and the pipes are original galvanized, they may be the cause — see low water pressure. No amount of fixture work fixes pipe that's closing up inside.

Problem pipe materials

Two materials are red flags. Galvanized steel (common pre-1960s) corrodes, restricts flow, and rusts water. Polybutylene (widely installed roughly 1978–1995, often gray plastic) becomes brittle and fails, and is considered defective — many insurers won't cover it. If your home has either, a repipe to modern PEX or copper is often just a matter of when.

Repiping replaces the supply lines throughout the house, typically with PEX (flexible, freeze-tolerant, cost-effective) or copper. A good crew minimizes wall openings and patches cleanly, and most homes stay livable during the work. It ends the leak-patching cycle, restores pressure and clean water, and adds value. The best way to decide on a repipe is to weigh it against what you're spending (and will keep spending) patching failures, plus the risk of water damage from the next burst.
